Tuesday Tools: Keeping Rabbits Away

One Daily Dirt reader wrote in and asked what to do about the rabbits that were eating all of her flowers. There are a couple of solutions, depending on how bad the problem is.
Rabbits live in thickets and shrubby areas so if you want to prevent them from taking up residence and possibly reproducing at your house, get rid of their habitat. Of course if your neighbors don’t do the same then it’s more than likely they’ll come visit your garden anyway for the free food.
One method for preventing rabbit invaders is to place a fence around the garden. You can use chicken wire or a more traditional fencing material like wood, or even a salvaged wrought iron fence (possibly faced with wire-mesh) as long as the pickets are close enough together and the fence is high enough so that the rabbits aren’t able to hop over it and into the garden.
Then there are the commercial rabbit repellents such as garlic clips and Liquid Fence , a repellent for both deer and rabbits. Most of these are organic or natural products and safe for plants, animals, humans, and the environment. Garlic clips for example are made from garlic oil. These types of repellents must be applied every few weeks in order to be effective. Garlic clips are effective for about six months.
