Have you ever wondered how much sun your garden really gets? Now theres a way to find out using a nifty gardening tool called the Suncalc Sunlight Calculator is an electronic solar measuring device that accurately measures the amount of accumulated light in a particular location in the garden.
Using the sunlight calculator enables gardeners to match a plant’s light requirements (full sun, partial sun, etc.) with the actual light conditions. According to the website, the device is extremely accurate. Solar energy measured by Suncalc was virtually identical with the readings from the official Radiometer at the global warming solar monitoring station just north of the Orono campus of the University of Maine.
A tool like this is useful in any climate, but its really great for temperate climates where weather conditions can be quite variable even throughout the day. The SunCalc is easy to use too. Simply place it in the location where you want to measure the amount of light–technically referred to as photosynthetically active (PAR) light–turn it on and return 12 hours later to get a reading of Full Sun, Partial Sun, Partial Shade or Full Shade.
