Friday Five: Bountiful Harvest

‘Tis the season…for an overabundance of fruits and vegetables from the garden that is. If you’ve got a bumper crop of melons ripening on the vine or one too many zucchini on your counter, then here are five ideas for sharing your summer harvest.
1. Throw a Garden Party
Celebrate your bountiful harvest with family and friends. Indoors or outside in the garden, it doesn’t matter.
2. Create a Centerpiece
Why not try creating a masterpiece with vegetables? Afterwards, the guests can each take a vegetable home like the zucchini pictured above.
3. Whip Up Some Refreshing Drinks
Fruit smoothies are a great way to get your vitamins and stay cool. You can even mix in a few veggies like peas, carrots, and butternut squash, which are on the sweeter rather than savory side.
4. Create A Fun Fruit Dessert
There’s nothing like a plentiful supply of luscious fruits to send your imagination into overdrive. No matter what the result, you can’t go wrong creating a dessert made with fruit.
5. Give It Away
While many food banks only accept non-perishable items, soup kitchens and other places that prepare meals on a daily basis are often happy to receive fresh fruits and vegetables. Call ahead to see what’s accepted first.
