How to Manage a Yard Sale before Moving

Having a yard sale before moving to your new home or apartment is a good way to lessen the items that you need to put into boxes which could, in turn, lower your moving costs. Aside from this, selling the items that you no longer need or do not want to bring to your new place could also help you raise some money which you can put towards your moving expenses. However, you need to know that there are a couple of things you need to do and keep in mind when having a yard sale before moving.

One of the first things you need to do would be to sort out your belongings. Try to go through each room and sort out the items into three groups: items to throw away, items to keep and items to sell. Doing this would save you a lot of time and energy since you would be able go through your entire house a lot faster.

After having all of the items that you would be selling on your yard sale, come up with their prices and put price tags on them. For the cheaper and smaller items such as those that you are planning to sell for a dollar each, you can place them in boxes or storage containers with a label of how much they cost. However, for the bigger and more expensive items such as furniture and appliances, make sure to put price tags on each of them so that interested buyers would be able to instantly know how much they cost instead of asking you every time they are interested in something.

If possible, advertise your yard sale both online and offline. Aside from giving away flyers and putting up posters, it would also be good to advertise your yard sale on some online forums which have members who live in your area on forums which are frequented by people who go to yard sales.

If you end up left with a couple of or a lot of items after your yard sale is over, it would be best to just donate them. There are a lot of groups and organizations that accept all kinds of donations. By donating your items, you would not just be able to get rid of the items you no longer need or do not want to bring to your new home but also help others who are in need.

After getting rid of everything that you no longer need, it would be much easier for you to go through the packing. You would also be able to save a lot of money on moving supplies and get lower quotes from apartment moving companies in Denver or in the city where you are moving from or to.

Right on Time

My parents have a beautiful Chinese Chippendale clock in their home that I have admired since I was little. My grandmother got it at Florian Papp in NYC in the 1950s, and it is so pretty. I love a variety of antique clocks and how much personality they can add to a room.

The face of the clock,

and a closer look at the Chinoiserie scene.

When I was at their house last month I was thinking about how that clock adds so much to their living room. Often clocks are functional, but I think the most beautiful ones are those that are antique and make a visual impact. This large free standing clock looks like it adds a touch of history to an otherwise updated room.

This Italian apartment is steeped in history, a very small and unassuming antique clock on mantel piece seems like the right piece.

This next clock has been placed in a very unique and smart location- the landing.

Another Swedish Mora clock makes an impression in this hallway. It also works well that the mirror to the left is about the same height as the clock and meets the height of the slope of the ceiling underneath the top portion of the stairs.

This black Grandfather clock has a stately presence against the scenic wallpaper.

This old world French clock adds a practical component to this feminine kitchen

This Italian inspired home features a clock in a non-traditional location in front of the living room window.

The most important feature of a working Grandfather clock are the movements which control the chimes, time and hour strike.

The components of the clock below, which I find interesting

Maybe my parents clock also tells you how I have been influenced by antiques. I have a true appreciation for them and their beauty. Avolli is having a sale worth checking out. Here are a few of the clocks

Im usually right on time, lets hope this week too.

The Worst Paint Colors For A Home Exterior

We’ve all seen them. Maybe you’re out for a leisurely stroll, or a relaxing drive. You decide to check out some of the nearby neighborhoods. And then, without warning … you encounter one of THOSE houses. You know what we’re talking about–a home painted with a color so garish, so horrible, that you can’t help but admire the homeowner even as you laugh and question his or her mental reasoning skills.

So why is a good exterior color so important, anyway? Well, it can easily enhance the appearance of your house–and, just as quickly, detract from your home’s exterior and curb appeal. Plus, if you live in a neighborhood, you and your neighbors may be concerned about an overall aesthetic. It doesn’t mean your homes have to look exactly alike, but you all probably strive for harmony so that the overall effect is more pleasing to the eye.

Stay Away From These Colors If you’ve decided to paint your home’s exterior, don’t go too crazy when selecting a color. Sure, purple and orange can be inventive in a kid’s room–but on the outside of your house? Nope. Other color mistakes we’ve seen include Smurf (yes, Smurf) blue, pink and mustard yellow. Or a combo of yellow and red, as seen in the above picture, which we’re now calling the McDonald’s house.

If you’re eager to inject some color into your home’s exterior, there are other ways to approach the project. Try a vividly hued front door, perhaps, in a sunny yellow or bright red. Install some colorful porch furniture, or plant bright flowers along your walkway to liven up your yard.

How To Select An Exterior Color We don’t mean to sound like you can only choose gray or white or taupe for your home’s exterior. If you want color, try a muted hue–maybe a smoky gray blue, or brick red, or a pale yellow. Those are all great choices that complement a variety of exterior materials and trim color.

If you live in an older home, you may want to do a bit of research and pick a hue that’s historically accurate.

And regardless of your home’s age, keep the existing exterior features in mind. Do you have brick, stucco or another material on the outside of your home? What’s the color of your roof? These are all things you’ll want to consider so that you can ensure your paint choice blends with these elements.

Now it’s your turn. What’s the craziest house color you’ve seen?
