Chalkboard Fireplace Surround :: A Year Later

This corner fireplace has been a challenge to deal with.

Here’s how it looked when we moved in.  It has a yellowy fake marble surround and a tiny piece of weak, glued on scroll work.

I had that carved wooden piece for years, I bought it from TJ Maxx for $13 so I nailed it up there.  And last year I told you about how I applied stick on chalkboard paper to the surround. I still love it.  But, the “bricks” were looking sad so I got out my chalk markers and redrew them.  I want it to be a little imperfect and quirky.

We’ve had the chalkboard peely sheet things up for a year now and they have behaved just fine.  And we used the fireplace many times last winter.  If you are renting or don’t want to mess up the current surround you have but want a change, this peel and stick chalkboard vinyl is a great solution. Just make sure it’s not too close to your firebox.  If you have some awful material there and you own your house, you could just paint it.

Here’s the google search for chalkboard vinyls. Wall Candy Arts sent me some last year for free and I noticed the price seemed high but, the quality is great and they were easy to cut and reposition.

I hope to get my mantel looking a little more like fall.  You too?  Want some motivation?  How about a fall mantel link up party next Wednesday, September 8th.  Is that too early?

Eco-friendly pavilion from 2000 recycled beer crates

Eco-friendly architecture is in vogue around the world with innovative building materials cropping up. The latest is 2000 beer crates used to make Boxel, a temporary experimental pavilion created by digital design students from the University of Applied Sciences in Detmold, Germany within a week. Turning beer crate into building is sure an eye-popper!!

The temporary construction was designed using parametric software to control the position of the boxes in relation to the overall geometry and to analyse the structural performance. Several static load tests were made to understand the structural behaviour of the unusual building material. In parallel to a series of shearing and bending tests in the university’s laboratory of material research, the structural concept was simulated and optimised using FEM-Software.

Finally, a simple system of slats and screws was chosen for the assembly of the pavilion that allowed for a flexible and invisible connection. Additional bracings were placed in the upper part of the boxes to generate the required stiffness of the modules. The structural load transfer was realised by concrete-lined boxes at the three base points that served as foundation for the pavilion.

Still wondering what makes the structure eco-friendly? Well, the beer crates are recycled old beer crates donated by a local brewery. Though temporary in nature, the structure reminds us of applying imagination to turn a host of daily use items into architectural wonders!!

late summer

School is back in session here in Charlotte as of today,  and it is even a bit cooler than usual for an August day. Though surely the heat will return, summer is starting to come to a close. I am starting to think about the fall, holidays and Christmas cards. I know I will blink and it will all be here.

We have had a wonderful summer and a few fun vacations, but I am ready to get back into a routine with the boys and work. One of my little guys now associates “late summer” with the start of football…

While we were away I enjoyed reading the September issue of Food and Wine and love this kitchen featured in it by Tracery Interiors. It is kind of rustic with some modern elements. How smart instead of one large island to make  the two different ones with light fixtures above each.

I also feel fall coming because I just signed up to go to the huge Metrolina fall expo. with Eddie and Jaithan. Click HERE if your are in Charlotte and want to go. It will be great! Anna, Suzanne and I will be there Saturday, November 6th. Hope to see you there!

During the next two weeks I am going to “regroup” as I like to call it and get back into the swing of things.

I am going to try to enjoy the late summer too.
